P C 3B 2B SS LF CF RF 1B SS covers P covers R1 BAT grounder throw

⚾ Situation

You are the first baseman. There is a runner on 1st and there are no outs.

The ball is grounded to you.

Where do you throw the ball?

✔ Answer

Cut the lead runner down by throwing to 2nd where your shortstop should be covering.

It is always more important to keep a runner out of scoring position if at all possible.

💡 Decision Tips

  • Shortstop covers 2nd on balls hit to the right side
  • Getting the lead runner prevents scoring position
  • Same play applies with 1 out (see 1st-2)
  • With 2 outs, step on 1st instead (see 1st-3)
