⚾ Situation

You are the first baseman. There are runners on 1st and 3rd with 1 out.

Late in the game, your team is down by one run. Coach has the infield playing in.

Where do you throw?

✔ Answer

Throw to 2nd (SS covers) for the double play. Looking the runner back wastes time — go straight for two outs.

Concede the run from 3rd. The DP gets you out of the inning. You or the pitcher covers 1st for the return throw.

💡 Decision Tips

  • 1 out = DP opportunity ends the inning, even if the run scores
  • Down by 1 — you need outs more than preventing one run
  • Infield in means shorter throws, quicker turn
  • Don't waste time looking R3 back — he's going to score either way
  • Pitcher must break for 1st on any ball hit to the 1B side
