1st Baseman

Situation 1st — 15

R on 1st & 3rd
2 OUTS
P C 3B 2B SS LF CF RF 1B SS covers R1 R3 BAT grounder throw

⚾ Situation

You are the first baseman. There are runners on 1st and 3rd with 2 outs.

Top of the last inning, score is tied. A ball is hit sharply to your right, pulling you toward the foul line.

Where do you throw?

✔ Answer

Throw to 2nd base (SS covers). A force out at either 1st or 2nd ends the inning — since you're pulled right, 2nd base is the shorter, easier throw.

Don't try to beat the batter back to 1st from way out in foul territory. The SS should be closer and already covering.

💡 Decision Tips

  • 2 outs = any force out ends the inning, pick the easiest one
  • Pulled right = 2nd base is closer than running back to 1st
  • SS covers 2nd on all balls hit to the right side
  • Force play — no tag needed, just get the ball to 2nd before R1
  • Tied game, last inning — don't risk an error on a longer throw
