⚾ Situation

You are the first baseman. There are runners on 2nd and 3rd with 0 outs.

A ground ball is hit to you and you field it cleanly.

What should you do?

✔ Answer

Look the runner back to 3rd, then go to 1st — step on the bag or toss to the pitcher covering.

If the runner breaks for home, throw home instead. This allows a cutoff play — the catcher or a cutoff man can redirect the ball if needed.

💡 Decision Tips

  • 0 outs = get the sure out at 1st, don't gamble
  • Quick glance freezes R3 — most runners won't go on a ball hit to 1B
  • If R3 breaks, throw home — you have a clear lane from the right side
  • Pitcher always heads for 1st on balls hit to the 1B side
  • R2 will advance to 3rd — that's OK with 1 out after your play
