⚾ Situation

You are the first baseman. There are runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs.

Any ground ball is hit to you.

Where do you throw?

✔ Answer

Go to 1st base — the easiest out. The only runner any infielder should be concerned with is the batter going to 1st.

Step on the bag yourself. Can't risk an error on a longer throw with 2 outs. The 3rd out ends the inning regardless of what the runners do.

💡 Decision Tips

  • 2 outs = get the easy 3rd out, nothing else matters
  • No force at home (R on 2nd & 3rd, not bases loaded) — catcher would need a tag
  • Longer throws = more error risk with 2 outs
  • Step on the bag — zero chance of a throwing error
  • If you can't reach 1st, toss to pitcher heading for the bag
