It is always more important to keep a runner out of scoring position if at all possible.

- Shortstop covers 2nd on balls hit to the right side
- Getting the lead runner prevents scoring position
- Same play as 0 outs (see 1st-1)
- With 2 outs, step on 1st instead (see 1st-3)
