⚾ Situation
You are the first baseman. There is a runner on 2nd and there is 1 out.
The runner breaks for 3rd on a hard hit grounder that you field right at 1st base.
What should you do?
✔ Answer
Step on 1st for the out, then throw to 3rd.
If the runner is more than ⅔ to 3rd, hold your throw — you now have 2 outs and an errant throw lets the runner score.
💡 Decision Tips
- Step on 1st FIRST — secure the sure out
- Then evaluate the runner — can you get him at 3rd?
- If runner is past ⅔ of the way, hold the ball
- An errant throw to 3rd lets the runner score — don't give free runs
