P C 3B 2B SS LF CF RF 1B P covers R2 BAT grounder toss

⚾ Situation

You are the first baseman. There is a runner on 2nd and there are 2 outs.

You are at medium depth and a high chopper is hit to you. You determine you cannot get to 1st before the runner does.

What should you do?

✔ Answer

Toss to your pitcher who should be heading for 1st to cover the bag.

On ALL balls hit to the 1st base side, it is the pitcher's responsibility to ALWAYS head for 1st for the cover.

💡 Decision Tips

  • Pitcher ALWAYS covers 1st on balls hit to the right side
  • If you can't beat the runner, don't force it — toss to pitcher
  • An underhand toss is safest at short range
  • Runner on 2nd doesn't matter — get the 3rd out at 1st
