⚾ Situation

You are the first baseman. There is a runner on 3rd and there is 1 out. Game is tied, 2nd inning.

A sharp grounder is hit straight to you.

Where do you go with the ball?

✔ Answer

You may have a chance to get the runner at home. If the runner breaks and you have a clear throw, fire it home.

If the runner doesn't break or you don't have the throw, go to 1st. Another out makes it 2 outs — you still have time to win.

💡 Decision Tips

  • 1 out = you can afford to take the sure out at 1st
  • Tied game in the 2nd — lots of baseball left, don't gamble
  • Sharp grounder = quick play — check R3 immediately
  • If runner is less than halfway home, take 1st for the easy out
  • Errant throw home with 1 out puts runner on base AND scores a run
