1st Baseman

P C 3B 2B SS LF CF RF 1B 2B covers R3 BAT hopper throw

⚾ Situation

You are the first baseman. There is a runner on 3rd and there are 2 outs.

A slow hopper is hit your way. You charge the ball and field it cleanly, momentum going toward home.

Where do you throw?

✔ Answer

Throw to 1st where your second baseman should be covering. The easiest out ends the inning.

Avoid the close play at home — the catcher could get the ball knocked out, and a longer throw increases error risk with 2 outs.

💡 Decision Tips

  • 2 outs = get the easy 3rd out, don't gamble
  • Momentum toward home doesn't mean throw home — plant and throw to 1st
  • 2B should be sprinting to cover 1st the moment ball is hit to 1B side
  • A throw home risks a collision/dropped ball AND leaves nobody at 1st
  • Even if the run scores, the inning ends on the out at 1st
